James Marshall, known as Dalek, is an American painter and multidisciplinary artist recognised for his iconic Space Monkey character. Born in Connecticut and raised across multiple locations, including Japan and Hawaii, he developed his artistic identity through graffiti, punk, and skate culture. After studying sociology, anthropology, and fine art, he gained early recognition through exhibitions and collaborations, including support from Shepard Fairey and mentorship under Takashi Murakami. His work evolved from character-driven imagery into bold, geometric abstractions exploring tension, movement, and color. Now based in North Carolina, Dalek continues to exhibit internationally and create work that blends structure with spontaneity.
