Beginning painting graffiti in Bristol in the early 1990s, Banksy's ascent to contemporary art darling & media sensation came about after he switched techniques and began to use stencils. The gently subversive wit, and wry political commentary was a great hit around the East End of London, and his 'Turf War' show in 2003 saw his first brush with media notoriety after animal rights activists objected to the use of live animals.
Since then, Banksy has moved far beyond being categorised as a 'stencil artist', and has found ever more creative methods of delivering his message: for example smuggling his own paintings into major museums (including four in New York in one day); chaining up an inflatable Guantanamo Bay prisoner in DisneyLand, opening an animatronic pet shop in New York, distributing 500 doctored copies of Paris Hilton's debut CD, painting the Israel / Paelstine separation wall and filling an art gallery with rats for his 'Crude Oils' exhibtition.
A show in LA in 2005, featuring a live painted elephant, saw Banksy leap from British working class hero to international art star... since when prices for his work at auction have rocketed.
